Ancient Village at Carwynnen
In the 'Proceedings of the West Cornwall Field Club (Archaeological) New Series, Volume One, No. 2 1953-54' Professer Charles Thomas wrote an article as to the hut circles on the south-western slope of Carwynnen Hill (Copper Hill) O.D. 10/658365 about half a mile south of Pendarves Quoit.
He reports that the site was the subject of a excursion in the summer of 1896, as described in a rare edition of a pamphlet entitled "Camborniana" published in 1897 by the Camborne Student's Association.
In the 1930s there was an attempt to begin excavations in one hut and happily the results of this were given to Professor Charles Thomas.
In the 1950s it was feared that a Quarry near the site could be extended and this could cause damage to the village. A more comprehensive excavation was begun in the early 1950s and reported in the above publication.
Briefly two round huts were looked at and some pottery found. Today the site is very overgrown and difficult to find. However, the site is in a superb position within surviving moorland areas, overlooking the beautiful Carwynnen Valley which eventually leads down to the sea at Gwithian. It is hoped to build a historical profile of life in the valley and the environmental changes which have taken place.
